Talent Tuesday: Roger Leung

On Tuesdays, GC Marketing Services will post a short interview with one exceptional member of our Talent Database. We hope to find out what drives them to be the best Brand Ambassador that they can be and learn from their insights about how we can continue to improve our business. Our talent is as diverse as the events that we staff, and we hope that these testimonials will serve as a small thank you.

The day Roger accidentally stumbled upon GC and made a profile on a whim was a happy day for us. He’s got the right kind of positive attitude for a brand ambassador so it’s no surprise that he makes friends at the events he works.

Roger Leung is a happy surprise!

1. How long have you been a registered talent with GC and how did you hear about us?

I’ve been registered since March 2010 I believe. I was just getting into promotions and saw a post on Craigslist and decided what the heck! I remember when I first made my profile I had absolutely no idea what I was doing or even if it was legit. Almost two years later I just want to say “look at me now”.

2. What was your favorite event that you have worked for GC Marketing Services? Why?

It was actually my first event with GC as a brand ambassador for the launch of the HTC HD2 T-mobile phone.  It’s my favorite because one of my first jobs was with T-Mobile in Houston and to my surprise that day I had a brief chance to see old friends that I use to work with many years back.

3. Has anything ridiculous/funny happened while you were working a promotion?

I am still waiting for that something ridiculous to happen during an event—it’s inevitable that something will happen to me. I can be a walking klutz so keep in touch I’m sure there will be an update soon!

Don’t Be a Dummy: Being Successful Greeters

In this Jeff Dunham sketch (see clip below!) a crotchety ventriloquist dummy wants to be a Walmart Greeter—a position ideally exemplified by positive and upbeat personnel. In the event staffing business we sometimes have the same thing happen… but they’re not wooden dummies… and it’s not very funny!

  • Positive, upbeat and friendly

To be a successful greeter/tradeshow representative/brand ambassador that we want to hire again and again, you have to be a positive, friendly, and upbeat person. If this just isn’t you, you’re not going to do well working for GC.

  • Rested and in good health

If you’re a wonderfully bubbly person but you show up hung-over on the morning of the event, that’s not good. If you show up hung-over we’ll take notice and you probably won’t be hired again. Part of being asked to staff an event is the understanding that you will show up rested and ready to work.

  • Helpful and team-oriented

It’s not just about being friendly with customers! Being helpful to the company running your event and working well with your other team-members helps the whole event run smoothly and will leave your staffers feeling better about your performance.

Customers can tell when you are at your best, and so can we!

Thanks for being a great staff and keep up the good work,

The GC Marketing Services Team

The First Flash Mob: Marketing Lessons from the Love Rug

The first modern flash mob checks out a rug to see if it's right for their "free love commune."

Legend has it (and most people agree) that the very first modern flash mob happened in a New York Macy’s on the evening of June 17th, 2003. The “moberators” (great interview with the mythical moberator mastermind “Bill”) coordinated one hundred people who descended on the store and, for roughly ten minutes, asked the sales staff questions about a $10,000 rug they intended to use as their free-love commune’s shared “love rug.”

However, few people know that Love Rug flash mob was actually part of a second attempt after a failed flash mob. The original plan was to get a huge crowd of people outside of a Claire’s Accessories just for fun, but seven police officers and a police wagon were sufficient deterrent to discourage the flashmobbers. Someone had alerted the police before the event took place. But did mythical moberator Bill give up? Nay. This is what the Claire’s mob taught him (and us!):

Have a pre-mob location

Allow the mob to form at a separate location (or locations) so that when the decided time arrives, the mob can appear in full strength very quickly.

Timing

Flash mobs should be short and sweet. Seamless flow between pre-mob locations, meeting for the mob, and dispersal is integral to avoiding reprimand and also in achieving the desired “flash” effect.

Keep it underground

If too many people know about the mob, someone will alert Claire’s…

In our own experiences with flash mobs, we’ve also had some fun experiences surprising people with something unexpected. Check out our blog about the Candies Foundation teen pregnancy awareness campaign or a great video featuring pop star Ciara and YouTube sensation Keenan Cahill goofing around with our ‘pregnant teen flashmobbers.’

So, if you ever need a flash mob,

Talent Tuesday: Laura Aguinaga

On Tuesdays, GC Marketing Services will post a short interview with one exceptional member of our Talent Database. We hope to find out what drives them to be the best Brand Ambassador that they can be and learn from their insights about how we can continue to improve our business. Our talent is as diverse as the events that we staff, and we hope that these testimonials will serve as a small thank you.

——————————

Laura has been a valued member of the GC Talent Database for a long time now and experience has clearly paid off! The clients love her, the GC bookers love her, and her unrelenting dedication to the event staffing industry has put her a clear cut above the rest. Her professionalism and excellent attitude also extend to the glamorous world of film! Check out Laura’s IMDB profile or Laura’s homepage to find out more about her.

Laura Aguinaga is a professional.

1. How long have you been a registered talent with GC and how did you hear about us?

Now that I think about it I’ve been with GC for about 10 years now! WOW! How time flies! I found out  about the company through a mutual friend who was working an event at The Jacob Javits Center. I was always curious about how these people ended up booking these jobs and finally found my window of opportunity through her.

2. What was your favorite event that you have worked for GC Marketing Services? Why?

What a lot of people don’t know about me is that I love video games. When I was given the opportunity to work for the Wii/Lexus event at Rockefeller Center I was literally doing back flips. It not only gave me the opportunity to go out there and represent Nintendo, a brand I both love and trust, but it also gave me the opportunity to interact and play with people from all around the world!

3. Has anything ridiculous/funny happened while you were working a promotion?

Haha! Yes! I was actually working the Reebok event where we were working alongside comedian veteran Jim Breuer. We were by Times Square hyping the crowd with Reebok’s slogan Run Easy. Out of no where comes this man wearing a Nike hat. Jim convinces the guy to come on stage and to give up his hat for a Reebok Run Easy t-shirt. The man complies and we all begin this Reebok chant! It was awesome! Continue reading

Having Fun with Fliers

This video is… silly? Only nine seconds long? Hardly relevant?

Yeah, you’re right.

But our friend Johan has done some very clever things.

  • 1. Johan has gusto

He’s enthusiastic. The girls he’s handing fliers to are entertained and take his promotional material immediately—we can only assume its for the band Wave Array. His quick delivery and confidence make it hard to resist his offering.

  • 2. Johan is part of a team

He has friends who are playing guitar on a bench and laughing behind a camera. This grounding gives him confidence that he might not have when advertising alone. He leaps up to people to give them his fliers and the derives obvious joy from being goofy with his friends. (Compare his success rate to that of the woman in our last blog on fliers.) Handing out fliers alone is hard, which is why our street teams work together. Continue reading
